Stephen F. Austin Autograph Endorsement Signed on a Discharge Signed by Texas Ranger Captain John Bird. One page, 7.5" x 3". November 24, 1835. In full: "This is to certify that Nathan A. McFadin enter the Army of Texas on the 25th October last has served in my company and is now honourably discharged. Nov 24th 1835. [signed] John Bird Capt." Austin's endorsement is written directly beneath: "Capt. Bird has discharged the said N. McFadin, S.F. Austin."

John Bird arrived in Texas and settled in Austin's Colony in 1830. He was captain of the colony's militia and participated in an 1832 expedition against the Comanche. Later during the Texas Revolution, he commanded a cavalry unit that served near San Antonio in 1835; service to which the document refers. Austin was then serving as commander of the Texan forces in the area, but would soon cede command to Edward Burleson.

Condition: Flattened folds, and some wear. The document has been mounted to a smaller piece of card stock, with adhesive residue on verso.
