Stephen Decatur, Sr. Autograph Letter Signed "Stephen Decatur." One page, 7.75" x 9.75" (sight), aboard the Ship of War Delaware; July 5, 1798. A letter written while in command of the USS Delaware addressed to John Barry. It reads: "I have to acknowledge the receipt of your favor of this date and thank you for your polite attention in communicating to me a 'Paragraph' of your orders. The orders rec'd by me on the 26 ult. from the Secretary of the Navy, were similar to the paragraph you have informed me of. Should you be out on the 10th Inst. I shall endeavor to fall in with you."

With holographic postscript, "I should have waited on you previous to my departure, but understanding you were indisposed, I was apprehensive of disturbing you."

Matted and framed with two lithographs of Decatur to an overall size of 26.5" x 16.25". Merchant shipmaster John Barry outfitted the first Continental fleet in Philadelphia in the Revolutionary War during which he commanded the Lexington and Alliance. Barry superintended the building of the frigate United States and made several cruises in her with other vessels under his command in the quasi-war with France (1798-1800). He is known as "Father of the Navy." A good friend of the family, Barry was instrumental in appointing Stephen Decatur, Jr. a midshipman aboard the USS United States.

Condition: Usual mail folds, moderate toning throughout. Small tear at fold at top edge. Bold signature, overall very good.
