DescriptionWilliam Penn Partially-Printed Document Signed "Wm. Penn." One page, 6.75" x 10", [England], May 20, 1682. As the Quaker proprietor of Pennsylvania prepared to leave England for American soil, he issues this receipt for monies received from Edward Bayly for land in Pennsylvania. In part:
"Know all men by these presents that I, William Penn of Warminghurst, in the county of Sussex, Esq. have had and receive of and from Edward Bayly of Groshan[?], in the County of . . . [illegible], yeoman the sum of five pounds sterling going for the purchase of Two hundred & fifty acres of land in Pennsylvania and the consideration money mentioned to be paid in and by one paire of indentures of . . . [illegible]. The said William Penn of the one part and the said Edward Bayly of the other part. . . . According to the purport of the same indentures of and from which said summe of five pounds the said William Penn, hereby for myself, my heirs execute administrate and assignes release quit claims and forever discharge the said Edward Bayly, his heirs execute, Administrate, and Assignes and every of them by these presents."
This transaction was witnessed by Ben Griffith and Thomas Cope, who have countersigned. Penn arrived in America five months later to begin what he called his holy experiment in his new province of Pennsylvania. To the right of his signature is his seal, intact. The paper exhibits some toning and weaknesses at the smoothed folds. Docketed on the verso, "Will Penn Land[?] Grant[?] for Edward Baylys Land."
