DescriptionWilliam Nathan Harold Smith Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages, 9.25" x 11.25", bifolium, Richmond, January 16, 1864, to Dr. R.H. Winborne. Smith, a representative in the Confederate Congress, writes a scathing condemnation of another letter, by a "Dr. Manneis [representative for Tennessee in the Confederate Congress, Dr Thomas Menees?]" attacking his positions on several issues.
It reads in part: "It is untruthful, disingenuous and abounding in demagogueism of the lowest type...Mr. Gannon is too intelligent not to see its meaning himself, and of his high character to be made the instrument of deceiving others. It is harmful to witness the use of such low arts and cunning for personal ends, in the midst of such a struggle as now engages all the energies & resources of the country..."
