William Henry Seward: Four Documents. 1) 1-page bifolium ALS, Washington, D.C., April 20, 1850, to H. V. Howling, acknowledging the forwarding of a letter, in part: "I do not feel at liberty in any case to interfere in the appointment of Deputy Marshalls, since I am so far removed from the scene...", 2) November 2, 1865 LS (signed on verso), declining to interdict the exportation of arms "to the revolutionary faction in Peru" as "... all restrictions and regulations... have been... rescinded." (three faint stains along the left side). 3) September 12, 1865 LS on Department of State mourning stationery, informing H. C. Compton that the information he desires can be obtained from "His Excellency H. J. Hamilton, Provisional Governor of Texas, who resides at Austin" (blank integral leaf reattached with archival tape). 4) 2-page bifolium ALS from Moses Grimmell, April 17, 1861, sent to Seward, in full: "Five thousand persons have just passed down Wall St. to make the Journal of Commerce hoist an American flag. The spirit is up in this city. I pray that the Gov't. may blockade any seceding port, and do it effectively too and at once." (signed on page two, docketed with internal repairs). Sold with two book plate engravings for display purposes.
