William H. Seward Writes About His Son Wanting to Start a New Job -- Early! Autograph Letter Signed 1 page, 7.5" by 10", Auburn, March 31, 1857. To Professor Alexander Dallas Bache, superintendent of the U.S. Coast Survey. In fine condition, albeit with faint pencil notes, quite erasable, in lower right corner. Seward's eldest son, the soldier Augustus Henry Seward, having served in the Mexican American War and in Indian Territory, was apparently eager to move on - ultimately, to Utah, as part of the U.S. Coast Survey. His father makes the point for him with this intercessory letter: " My son Lieutenant A.H. Seward desires me to say to you that although he has a furlough until the first of July next, he would prefer to go on duty at as early a day as he can be useful. Will you please inform me whether the order detailing him for the Coast Survey has been made and whether you have occasion for his services." The Coast Survey provided the nation's earliest nautical charts, hydrographic surveys, topographic surveys, geodetic surveys, city plans and, later, Civil War battle maps. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
