William H. Seward Two Autograph Letters Signed. William H. Seward Autograph Letter Signed. One full page with closing and signature on verso, 6.4" x 7.75", Washington; July 23, 1856. A letter to Robert Townsend replying to an inquiry regarding whether or not Irish Catholics should be granted full political rights. Seward writes: "Nonetheless I would not have you believe for a moment that I entertain doubts about the question you have raised. Neither as a Christian, a citizen, or a man do I think it becoming to deny to Irish Catholics or any other class of my fellow man the enjoyment of political rights equal to my own in the Republic..." Included is a copy of Townsend's original letter to Seward. Seward's letter has flattened folds, and an irregular left margin, where the integral blank has been removed.

William H. Seward Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 4.75" x 7.25", Washington; February 27, 1854. A brief letter to Reverend N.H. Barnes thanking him for his note: "I shall have great pleasure in sending you Congressional publications." Together with the original transmittal cover bearing a franking signature by Seward. Small mounting remnant and light soiling to verso. Transmittal cover has two small holes and is missing the top flap, with heavy wear and soiling.
