William Franklin Tax Act Signed as the colonial governor of New Jersey, ca. 1764. Two pages (bound by ribbon at the top margin), 12.5" x 15.5", "Council Chambers", June 28, 1766. The illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin signs this act which is headed, "An Act to Repave the Publick Roads in the Township of Hanover in the County of Morris by a Tax on the Inhabitants of the Same." The act begins, "Be it Enacted by the Governor, Council and General Assembly of this Colony, and it is hereby Enacted by the Authority of the same, That all Publick Roads or Highways now Laid out, or Hereafter to be laid out within the said Township, Shall be Repaired, Amended, Cleared out, and kept in Good Order, by a Rate and Assessment to be made from Time to Time."

William Franklin was the illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin and the last colonial governor of New Jersey. The younger Franklin did not share his father's patriotic political views and remained staunchly loyal to the English crown. He left for England in 1782 and never returned to America. This colonial document is fragile at the folds and is discolored along the left margin from dampstaining. Docketing on the verso of page two.
