DescriptionWilliam English Autograph Letter Signed "W.H.E.". Two pages, 4.75" x 8", June 15, 1868, to Mr. Walke. English writes of the imminent purchase of Alaska. With the usual fold creases and slightly soiled, otherwise in fine condition.
The letter reads, in part: "Genl R was out, but I discussed the Matter of Alaska freely with the rest of the staff and they all say that Genl Grant has said nothing on the subject of the purchase of Alaska, and that Mr. Washburn of the Mining Com, is not E.B. Washburne but C.C. Washburn. I suggested that I thought the impression produced by Genl Grant's enemies was that he was against extension, should be counteracted in some way, and I think it will be done."
