Description

William Ellery Autograph Letter Signed. One page with integral address leaf, 7.75" x 9.75", "Newport, August 27th 1814." Member of the Continental Congress, and Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Ellery is serving as customs collector of the port of Newport when he writes to Mrs. Sophia Dana of Cambridge, regarding the forwarding of a letter. In part: "Immediately on the receipt of your letter to your husband, I enclos'd it in a letter to Capt. David Myers of the Ship Jenny bound to England, desiring him to take particular of it and to see that it was delivered to Mr. Williams to whose care it was directed... It will, if the ship should arrive at London, without doubt, be safely deliver'd, but as she is not a regular cartel, she may be taken by the British, altho' she has as I am told, a permission to carry Passengers to England..." Letter is toned with fold separations and a seal tear.
