Description

    William Clark Deposition Signed "Wm Clark" as governor of the Missouri Territory. Two pages of one leaf, 7.5" x 12.5", St. Louis, Missouri Territory, May 3, 1819. The famous explorer signs the end of this deposition certifying that Dabney Jones was a Justice of the Peace in Pike County. The deposition was regards litigation in a case about surveying inconsistencies in the Missouri Territory. After exploring the Louisiana Purchase to the Pacific Ocean with Meriwether Lewis from 1803 through 1806, William Clark (1770-1838) was appointed by President Madison as governor of the Missouri Territory in 1813. He served in this role until 1820. Later in 1822, President Monroe appointed him superintendent of Indian Affairs, a position he held for sixteen years. The ink of the text and signature with paraph are very bold. Minor repairs to one hole. Blind-embossed paper seal. Age-toned paper. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.
