    Description

    U.S. Surgeon Generals: George M. Sternberg and William C. Gorgas Signed Cards. Two signatures of George M. Sternberg and William C. Gorgas, who served as the 18th and 22nd U.S. Army Surgeon General respectively. The card measures 4.75" x 35", no place; no date. It has been signed, "Geo M. Sternberg/Brig. Gen. U.S. Army." The second card measures 5" x 2.75", no place; no date. It has been signed, "W.C. Gorgas/Surgeon General U.S. Army." There are pencil and ink notations on verso.

    George M. Sternberg (1838-1915) is considered to be the first American bacteriologist. He researched the causes of both malaria and lobar pneumonia and later worked on bacteria in tuberculosis and typhoid fever. He served as Surgeon General from 1893 to 1902. William C. Gorgas (1854-1920) is best known for his tireless work in Florida, Havana, and the Panama Canal, where he worked to eradicate malaria and yellow fever. He was chief sanitary officer at the Panama Canal work site and implemented numerous programs in order to keep the men healthy, including draining swamps, using mosquito netting, and overseeing the construction of clean public water systems. He became Surgeon General in 1914 and held the position until his retirement in 1918.

    Condition: Both cards have pencil notations at the bottom margin of each, along with mounting residue on verso. The Gorgas card has a small amount of paper loss at the top right corner.
