Timothy Pickering Receipt for Restitution Signed "Tim: Pickering." One partially-printed page, 6" x 7" (width varies), n. p., January 1, 1782. Pickering, as quartermaster general for the Continental Army, here certifies that "there is due from the United States to Richard Southard the Sum of Thirty two pounds For Damage done in Meadow by public Horses - 8 Tons of Hay . . . in August 1781." Countersigned by John Tyson. Scattered areas of light foxing. Left edge scalloped, all other edges untrimmed and lightly toned.

Pickering (1745-1829) served as the adjutant general of the Continental Army, overseeing the construction of two giant chains which stretched the Hudson River, preventing British ships from sailing upriver. In 1780, he was made quartermaster general of the army by the Continental Congress and served in that capacity until 1785.
