DescriptionTimothy Pickering Letter Signed as Secretary of State "Timothy Pickering". One page, endorsements on the verso, 8" x 9.75", [Washington], January 11, 1796, to the "Commissioner of His Catholic Majesty". In this letter PIckering makes an inquiry of the Spanish Commissioner for information regarding a ship captured by the Spanish in the West Indies. A beautiful bold, bright letter in fine condition.
It reads, in part: "In the number of American vessels captured by the Spanish squadron in the West Indies, is the ship Russel, belonging to Newbury Port. Having no knowledge of the order of his Catholic Majesty alluded to in the enclosed copy of a letter from Mr. William Bartlett, the owner; I beg the favor of you to communicate to me any information you may possess on the subject; in order that the interested may be instructed in the best means of obtaining retribution for their losses." It was during this period that the Treaty of Friendship, Limits, and Navigation, signed at San Lorenzo el Real on October 27, 1795 was making its way through the approval process in the United States Senate, ultimately being ratified in March, 1796. The treaty called for, among other things, appointed commissioners to attempt to amicably resolve disputes between the U.S. and Spain with regards to boundary and shipping issues. This letter obviously put the new treaty to the test.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
HA.com receives more traffic than any other auction house website. (Source: Similarweb.com)
