Thomas McKean (1735-1817) Signer of the Declaration of Independence, Autograph Letter Signed "M.K", one page, 6.5" x 8.25", New Castle, [Delaware], April 22, 1771 to Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Penn (1729-1795) who was departing for England. McKean writes: "Our supream [sic] court will prevent me the hour of waiting on you personally with my compliments before your departure for England, I must therefore solicit your permission to pay them in this way. I condole, Sir, with you, on the occasion of your leaving your provinces, and with the peoples for their loss of one of the best of Governors..." Penn returned in 1773 as a full governor. When Pennsylvania created a new government one month after independence, Penn offered no resistance. Light toning, irregular margins, else very good. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
