Thomas Hutchinson (1711-1780) Last civilian Colonial Governor of Massachusetts, manuscript Document Signed "T Hutchinson" as Judge of Probate one page, 6.25" x 7.25", Boston, November 2, 1764 certifying that "... the Account of Jonathan Snelling Administrator Dr. Bonis now Complete annexed of the Estate of his late father Jonathan Snelling late of Boston Mariner deceased and a List of Debts remained due, it appears that the Debts will exceed the personal Estate..." Hutchinson, in reality a political moderate, was made the scapegoat by Massachusetts radicals for British tax policies. In 1765 a mob, mistakenly informed that Hutchinson supported the Stamp Act, and ransacked his home. Though Hutchinson opposed many of the British measures to tax the colonies, he was also opposed to mob rule that placed him in a precarious position. His involvement in the importation of tea in 1773 -- despite fierce opposition -- made him a political liability and he was replaced by General Thomas Gage in 1774. Neatly laid in to a larger sheet, light foxing and toning along folds, else Very Good. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
