Thomas Heyward, Jr. and Charles Cotesworth Pinckney Partly Printed Document Signed. One page, 13" x 8.25", Charleston, South Carolina, August 8, 1786. Being a warrant notifying law enforcement officers in South Carolina to find and compel a group of men to appear "before the Justices of said State, at the Court of Common Pleas, to be holden at Charleston, on the Second Tuesday in September next, to answer to...a Plea of trespass." Heyward, a signer of the Declaration and the Articles of Confederation, has signed the document as Judge at center left, beneath a blind embossed paper seal. The document is also signed by Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, a delegate to the Constitutional Convention, as the attorney for the plaintiffs - the trustees of "the Presbiterian [sic] Congregation in Williamsburgh Township." Pinckney has affixed his bold signature to the docket on verso, and added the following handwritten note: "To be served on all the Defendants or Copies left at their homes immediately." Document is moderately age toned, with one small area of ink burn.
