Thaddeus Stevens 1868 Letter Signed "Thaddeus Stevens". Two pages, 6" x 9", on House of Representatives letterhead with engraved Capitol building vignette, Washington, July 21, 1868, to F. F. Stockwell, Boston. In this letter the fiery Pennsylvania politician barely contains his disgust in answering a letter from a constituent regarding a piece of legislation recently passed by Congress. Apparently the constituent wasn't clear on the medium of exchange upon maturity of a recently issue of authorized bonds. Stevens sharply replies: "It was distinctly understood and so declared in open session more than half a dozen times that the principle was payable in 'legal tender', whatever should be money by our laws at the time they fell due would be competent to pay the principle. No well bred lawyer ever doubted this construction...Any execution in the hands of the Sheriff is always payable to him in whatever is the money of the country He is commanded to collect dollars, not ingots of gold, or horses in discharge of his Execution." Near fine condition. From the collection of Henry E. Luhrs.
