DescriptionTexas Lawyer's Oath. Two and one-half pages, 8" x 10", Erath County, Texas, October 20, 1869. This handwritten oath was signed by new Texas immigrant (and lawyer) recently from Alabama, Sion L. Perry. Some weakness (and slight separation) at folds.
The oath reads in part, "I Sion L. Perry do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States and of this State, that I will honestly demean myself in the practice of the Law, and will discharge my duty to my clients to the best of my ability, and I do further swear that since the adoption of this constitution by the Congress of the United States I being a citizen late of Alabama & now of Texas have not fought a duel with deadly weapons within this state or out of it. Nor have I such as accepted a challenge with any deadly weapons. . . . So help me God!"
