DescriptionTemple Houston Autograph Letter Signed. One page on "Temple Houston/ County Attorney" letterhead, 6" x 9.5", February 17, 1882, Brazoria, Texas, concerning the selling of land in Orange County, Texas. This letter has separated at a fold located 5.5" from the top. Other folds with some separation exist, making the letter fragile. Near fine.
Temple Houston (1860-1905), a lawyer living in Brazoria, was the youngest of Sam Houston's children. He was the first child born in the Governor's Mansion at Austin. According to an 1894 certified copy of Sam Houston's 1863 estate list (offered in this auction, visit HA.com/6018-22003), Sam Houston owned 2,922 acres in Orange County when he died in 1863. The penciled notation "Mostly sold" is written above the Orange County listing on the 1894 estate list and suggests that much of the Orange County land had been sold, possibly by Temple Houston, before the 1894 certified copy was made.
