    Description

    Stephen Hopkins Appointment Signed "Step. Hopkins" as governor and captain-general of the English colony of Rhode Island. One page, 12.25" x 7.5", June 17, 1758, commanding "...John Waterman junr. being by the General Assembly of the Colony, elected and chosen to the Place and Office of Captain of the first Company...of the Town of Warwick in the County of Kent...are hereby in the Name of His Most Sacred Majesty GEORGE the Second...authorized, impowered, and commissionated to have, take, and exercise the Office..." With blind embossed paper seal at top left; docketing on verso. Light to moderate toning along the folds which are weakened and separating at the edges with no loss of text. Hopkins signature is bold and bright.

    In 1756, Stephen Hopkins was elected chief magistrate of the colony of Rhode Island, an office he held with few interruptions until 1767. He is known to have faithfully discharged the duties of this responsible station with dignity and fairness, and he did not hesitate to propose and support measures designed to promote the interests of the colonies in opposition to the encroachments of British power. Hopkins was a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
