Stephen A. Douglas Clipped Signature and John B. Henderson Carte de Visite with Clipped Signature. Two clipped signatures from two high profile American politicians during the Civil War era. The first is a clipped franking signature, 2.5" x 0.75", no place; no date. It appears to have been clipped from a cover and reads, "free S.A. Douglas."

The second clipped signature measures 2" x 0.65", no place; no date. This also appears to have been clipped from a larger letter and reads, "J.B. Henderson" and has been adhered to a carte de visite of Henderson. The CDV measures 2.5" x 4", Washington, D.C.; no date. With a Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries backstamp on verso. On verso has also been written in ink: "Please write your name on this, under your picture for very truly yours, Miss Jennie E. Smith/Register Bureau/US Treasury/Washington DC." Henderson clearly obliged the request of his admirer from the Treasury Department.

Stephen A. Douglas (1813-1861) was a state Supreme Court judge, member of the House of Representatives, U.S. Senator. Most notably he ran for president against Abraham Lincoln in 1860. He was also a suitor of Mary Todd Lincoln. John B. Henderson (1826-1913) was a U.S. Senator from Missouri, appointed in 1862. He co-authored and co-sponsored the Thirteenth Amendment, which permanently abolished slavery in the United States.

Condition: The Douglas signature has moderate toning throughout, with soiling at the lower edge. It has been mounted to a thicker backing paper. The Henderson CDV has light soiling and foxing throughout, with bumped corners. There is a small amount of adhesive residue around the edges of the clipped signature.
