Stephen A. Douglas Autograph Letter and Two Cartes de Visite. One page letter, 7.5" x 8.5"; Washington, January 24, 1859. A brief letter sending his autograph and thanking the recipient for "reminding me of the two occasions on which we have met and which I recollect with a great deal of pleasure"; signed, "S.A. Douglas". Very clean with flattened folds. Together with two CDV images of Douglas. The first is a wet plate albumen mounted to a 2.4" x 4" card, a 3/4 standing view with his left hand resting on a table. Period pencil identification on the front mount, the back mark reads, "E. & H.T. Anthony, 501 Broadway... from photographic negative in Brady's National Portrait Gallery". Additional pencil notations on verso, light soiling and a tiny spot to the right of Douglas in the background. The second is a wet plate albumen, 2.4" x 4", half view pose, with D. Appleton back mark. Pencil identification on verso, and a few tiny dots in the background to the right of the subject. An ideal grouping commemorating the Lincoln-Douglas debates, which occurred just months preceding the date of the letter offered here.
