    South Carolina Governor Francis Wilkinson Pickens Autograph Letter Signed "F. W. Pickens". One page, 6.25" x 7.75", on State of South Carolina Head Quarters letterhead with integral second leaf, [Columbia], October 10, 1861. Governor Pickens writes in part: "Capt. J. F. Hunt says the rifles he got are in bad fix & need cleaning...You will receive them and order them put in thorough repair for him and return an account of expenses." Docketed on the verso. Francis W. Pickens (1805-1869) was governor of South Carolina at the time of the bombardment of Fort Sumter, serving until the end of 1862. A scarce letter, lightly toned with old, smoothed fold creases, otherwise in excellent condition.
