Senator Henry Clay Autograph Letter Signed "H Clay." One page, 7.75" x 9.75", Washington, April 25, 1850. Addressed to Thomas B. Stevenson, a Kentucky-born newspaper editor and friend of Clay's, he discusses rumors of changes to President Zachary Taylor's Cabinet less than two months after the president had assumed office, in part: "The rumors so rife of Cabinet changes a week or two ago have ceased, and at present there is no talk of any. It is said that the President told his Cabinet that he liked them very much, and that they told him that they like him very much, and so they agreed they would not dissolve that union. Most people believe, however, that ere long a change will be made. In the mean time there is very little concert & cooperation between the Capitol & the White House." Docketed on the verso. There is heavy separation along the lower horizontal fold and total detachment along the upper horizontal fold; separation also evident at the edges of the vertical folds. Toned.

Little did Clay realize how prophetic his last statement was with regard to changes to the Cabinet. Less than three months after writing this letter, President Taylor died. When Vice President Millard Fillmore took office, all of Taylor's Cabinet members were replaced within the remainder of the year.
