DescriptionSamuel M. Williams Autograph Document Signed. One page of one leaf, 7" x 5", Austin, March 17, 1833. Williams writes and signs this receipt for transporting wounded soldiers. In part: "Received of Col. James J. Ross three certificates given by John Meret in favor of Samuel Haslett for the freight of some wounded and sick soldiers from Brazoria to Guadalupe. . . . Which amount I will include in the claim I have against the [Mexican] Government. . . . [Signed] Samuel Williams." Clean with smoothed folds. Lightly taped to a backing with an overall size of 8.5" x 11".
Samuel Williams (1795-1858) began a close working relationship with Stephen Austin in 1823, translating (he spoke English, French, and Spanish), clerking, and managing the colony when Austin traveled. For these and other services, he received 49,000 acres of well-positioned land in Texas.
