Description

Houston requests his final quarterly salary as first elected President of the Republic

Samuel Houston Manuscript Document Signed as President of Texas. DS "Sam Houston," one page, 8.5" x 5.5" (sight), Houston, December 11, 1838. It reads: "Please pay to Col George W P[?] all the moneys owed me by Government up to date... to the Hon... Treasurer of the Republic of Texas." Boldly signed by Houston with his ornate paraph. Elected the first President of the Republic of Texas in September 1836, Sam Houston served from October 22, 1836, to December 10, 1838; this document was the request for his last salary payment of his first term as president of the Republic. According to figures at bottom, Houston was due $2465.75 for the period Sept. 12 to Dec. 10, 1938; or an annual salary of $10,000. By decree, he was ineligible to succeed himself; but would run again in 1841 and was elected, serving from December 12, 1841 to December 9, 1844. Texas was now in the midst of a fiscal crisis. Setting an example, Houston had Mirabeau B. Lamar's presidential mansion boarded up, moving into an Austin boarding house. The legislators followed suit by cutting their own salaries from $5 to $3 per day, and Houston's annual salary was cut in half, from $10,000 to $5,000. With toning and expected folds; framed to an overall size of 16.5" x 13".
