Samuel Houston Autograph Letter Signed "Sam L Houston" with a brief postscript signed "Houston", 2pp., aboard the "Steamer Ben Franklin", March 16, 1851, to prominent businessman and temperance activist William Larimer, Jr. Accompanied by General Larimer's original letter of invitation, one page, 7.75" x 10", Pittsburgh, March 13, 1851. Houston's letter is in fine condition, with light soiling on integral address cover affecting the postscript. Accompanying Larimer letter is in very good to near fine condition, with wear along folds and a few light ink stains.

Houston writes to decline an invitation to speak at a Temperance event. In part: "With pleasure I acknowledge the receipt of your kind and highly complimentary invitations in behalf of the Ladies and Gentleman of Pittsburg and its vicinity to deliver an address on the subject of Temperance... Should I enjoy, on any occasion hereafter, the pleasure of a visit to your city... I will be very proud & happy... to render cause the slightest aid to the Holy cause of Temperance! Its beneficial effects upon mankind cannot be too highly appreciated..." In a postscript marked "Private," he adds: "This is written so hastily that I think it would not pass muster! Don't you think so General?"

Letter is marked "Temperance Correspondence" at top. An ironic praise of temperance by Houston as his drinking habits were widely known.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
