"Pay to the Order of James W. Simmons . . . for Protection of the Frontier"

Sam Houston Treasury Warrant Endorsed "Sam Houston" as governor of Texas. One page, 8" x 3.5", Austin, September 27, 1860. The warrant is also endorsed by Texas Ranger Lieutenant Joseph Walker and countersigned by Comptroller Clement R. Johns and Treasurer Cyrus H. Randolph. Less than one year after beginning his first and only term as Texas' seventh governor, Houston endorses this this warrant that reads:

"The Treasurer of the State of Texas will pay to the Order of James W. Simmons pr. Jo. Walker Attorney - Twelve Dollars, out of any money appropriated by Act of February 3rd, 1844 for Protection of the Frontier this amount being for Service rendered as private in Lieut. Jos. Walker's Company."

Lieutenant Joseph Walker commanded a company of Texas Rangers/Volunteers as part of the Rio Grande Expedition from November 1859 until January 1860. Walker served under Major John "RIP" Ford, who was commander of all Rangers along the Rio Grande. James Simmons, comptroller of the Republic of Texas from 1839-1840 and treasurer from 1840-1841, was brother to Cleveland Simmons, who died at the Alamo. The warrant exhibits a small tear to upper right corner and chipping to upper edge.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
