Description
Sam Houston Signed Land Grant. One page on vellum, 14.75" x 12.75", "City of Austin", October 17, 1860, No. 575, Vol. 30, granting "W. H. Witt, assignee of William A. Trimble...three hundred and twenty acres of land" in Dallas and Denton counties. Possibly land granted to a soldier for service in the army. There is a William Trimble listed as having served under D. C. Ogden during the San Antonio campaigns and died at Perote Castle after being captured. Countersigned by General Land Office Commissioner Francis M. White. Houston's large signature is boldly written in the lower right corner. Docketing on verso.Houston was elected governor of Texas in 1859 and has the distinction of being the only person to serve as the governor of two different states (he was elected governor of Tennessee in 1827). Despite Governor Houston's opposition to secession, Texas seceded on March 2, 1861. Houston, refusing to support the move, was evicted from office two weeks later. This document was signed less than six months before that eviction.
Condition: Bold large "Sam Houston" signature, with light blossoming in some areas. Foxing and toning throughout. Vertical and horizontal flattened folds; folds have heavy wear with separations in numerous areas. Small amount of paper loss at top right edge, at fold intersections and along margins.
