Sam Houston: Letter Signed [LS]. One page of a bifolium, 8" x 10", Washington, D.C.; July 10, 1846. The letter, signed "Sam Houston", addressed to Major Charles Yancey, is in response to inquiries about the limitation acts of Texas, and reads in part:

"I am not prepared to give you the information you desire in regard to the effect of the existing limitation laws in Texas, for the reason that the Legislature lately in session made, I think, certain alterations, which I have not yet seen, and, consequently, which I am unacquainted with. It would be well for you to write to Gen. Megginson, or some other lawyer in Texas, (says Peter W. Gray, Esq., of Houston,) who could give you the desired information." The letter has docketing on verso. Texas was annexed by the United States just a few months prior to this letter's date, on February 19, 1846. This proved to be the catalyst for the Mexican-American War that broke out in April. It is possible that this letter's reference to "limitation acts of Texas" is in regard to the fight over borders and territories between Texas and Mexico.

Condition: Usual mail folds, light toning around edges, with minor foxing and staining at lower margin. Darker toning and staining along folds on verso. Otherwise, very fine, signature is very bold.
