DescriptionSam Houston Land Grant Signed as governor of Tennessee. One partially-printed page, 12.5" x 15.5", Nashville, February 26, 1828, granting to "Joel Kean . . . a certain TRACT of LAND containing fifty acres lying . . . on the waters of the Lowe's branch." Houston's signature, appearing at lower right, lacks the usual paraph so often seen in later signatures. Docketed on the verso. Weakening along the folds has caused some separation. A large hole is seen near the upper left corner from removal of the Tennessee state seal. Scattered spots of foxing and light toning is present.
Houston served one term as Tennessee's governor (October 1827-April 1829) before coming to Texas in 1832. He later served two non-consecutive terms as president of the Republic of Texas and one term as governor of Texas, the only man to hold the position of governor of two states as well as the head of a foreign nation.
