Sam Houston. Document Signed. Dated: Nacogdoches, September 15, 1836. A handsome legal document, 14" x 8", identified on the verso in a clerk's hand: "Power of Attorney, John K. Allen to August C. Allen." The document is signed boldly at the bottom by Sam Houston as witness. Houston had been elected only ten days earlier as the first president of the new Republic of Texas and would be inaugurated the following month. Houston signed the document as witness to John Kirby Allen's granting of full power of attorney to his brother, Augustus Chapman Allen. The document is also signed by John M. Dor (or Dorr) as primary judge of the municipality of Nacogdoches, affirming at the bottom: "I certify the foregoing to be a true copy of the original filed and recorded in my office."

Active in the shipping business and other business ventures, the Allen brothers had come to Texas in 1832 and given strong support to the Texan Revolutionary cause. Elected in 1836 to serve as representative from Nacogdoches to the first Congress of the Republic, John Kirby Allen, together with his brother, eagerly bought land along Buffalo Bayou. There they founded the city of Houston, which they named in honor of their close friend Sam Houston. Courtesy of Denwood & Dana Butler, Mason. Consigned Lot

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
