DescriptionSam Houston Autograph Letter Signed. One page, 5" x 8", Washington, January 11, 1858. Sam Houston was serving as a U.S. Senator from Texas when he sent his autograph to Charles H. Anderson of New York, in part: "At your request I send you my autograph." As is usual with the larger than life Houston, his signature and paraph are very large and bold. Mounting remnants on the verso (in the corners) has caused light staining on the recto.
Sam Houston (1793-1863), the hero of the Texas Revolution, a veteran of the War of 1812, is the only man to serve as governor of two different states, Tennessee (1827-1829) and Texas (1859-1861), and the only one to serve as a foreign head of state (he twice served as president of the Republic of Texas, 1836-1838 and 1841-1844). In addition to his time as a U.S. Senator, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Tennessee (1823-1827).
