    Description

Salmon P. Chase Autograph Letter Signed "S P Chase." One page, 4.25" x 7.25" (sight), Columbus [Ohio], March 4, 1860, regarding the mobilization of the German vote during the upcoming presidential election. He marks the letter "Confidential" and writes, in part: "I have written to [Friedrich] Hassaurek about the importance of holding German meetings immediately. Please call at the office of the Republikaner and get their cooperation. There is some feeling I see between the R. the Volksblatt & between some people & Hassaurek. I wish this to be settled: but perhaps it is not best to attempt it here...Please contact Hassaurek...I have great confidence in him...As Carl Schurz will soon be in Ohio I want the meeting in Cincinnati held before he comes..."

More Information: Friedrich Hassaurek (1831-1885) was born in Austria and immigrated to the United States following the Vienna Rebellion of 1848. He settled in Ohio and worked a journalist. He was instrumental in organizing the German populace, one of the largest ethnic groups in the United States, to vote for Lincoln. Double matted and framed with a Chase CDV to an overall size of 16" x 13.25".
