Description

Salmon P. Chase Autograph Letter Signed of Condolence to Margaret Bailey on the death of her husband Gamaliel, who had died at sea on June 5, 1859. Three pages, 7" x 8.75", Columbus; July 9, 1859. Chase writes, "They describe to me your deep anguish in a way which moved my profoundest sympathy. But my dear friend, terrible as the blow is you must not let yourself be so stunned by it as to lose sight of God's goodness or of your duties... Mr. Piatt tells me that Mr. Pierce has been written to on the subject of his taking charge of the Era... I should have come to Washington ere now myself had not Piatt's letter given pretty distinct intimation that my objective would have been misconstrued & that my visit might do harm rather than good..."

The letter is accompanied by an earlier letter dated June 1, 1859 from Chase to Margaret Bailey enclosing a $150 in subscription fees for the Era on behalf of several subscribers. The archive also includes eight letters from Bailey to Chase written during the last months of his life. Several of the letters express anguish regarding late subscriptions. Bailey writes knowing that he is very sick, and possibly dying; his primary concern being to raise funds to provide for his family as well as ensure the continued existence of the National Era. The final letter in the group is from Margaret Bailey to Chase with content regarding the circumstances of the family as well as news regarding operations at the National Era. Overall condition is very good to near fine, with dockets by Chase on most of the letters.
