DescriptionRoger Sherman, American Revolutionary War Statesman, Autograph Letter Signed "Roger Sherman". One page receipted and docketed on the verso, 8" x 4.25", New Haven, [Connecticut], May 16, 1787, to John Lawrence, treasurer. Here Sherman signs a letter directing John Lawrence, the state treasurer, to pay Jonathan Fitch the amount of three pounds "lawful money" from a debenture owed to him by the Supreme Court. The paper has uniformly toned and has the usual fold creases, otherwise it is in fine condition. The letter is accompanied by an 8" x 10.5" engraved portrait after a painting by Chappel.
Roger Sherman has the distinction of being the only man to sign all four of the great American documents - the Continental Association, the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Confederation, and the Constitution.
