    Description

Robert Morris Signed Indenture. Six pages, 8" x 13", Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; March 6, 1804. An indenture between Turbult Francis and Nimrod Pennington originally written March 7, 1776. Robert Morris testifies to the authenticity of Turbult Francis's signature on the fourth page which is dated 1804. It reads in part: "Robert Morris of the City of Philadelphia being duly sworn saith that he is well acquainted with the Handwriting of Turbilt Frances lately of the said City deceased having frequently received Letters from the said Turbult." Signed, "Robt Morris."

Condition: Original binding string still present. Integral fold has been professionally repaired and reinforced with archival tape. Amateur tape repair to verso of three pages. Pages three and four have lost a 5" x 7" section, however there is no loss to text. Some edgewear with chipping and several small, closed tears. Pencil notation to recto. Lightly toned with some minor soiling.

More Information: Robert Morris (1734-1806), widely known as the "financier of the American Revolution," was one of the Founding Fathers and signers of the Declaration of Independence. He served as the Superintendent of Finance from 1781 to 1784 and is considered, along with Alexander Hamilton, to be a founder of the United States financial system. It was Morris who recommended Hamilton for the post of Secretary of the Treasury after declining it himself. After the Revolutionary War he became deeply entrenched in land speculation and formed a partnership with John Nicholson to create the North American Land Company. It proved a spectacular disaster for both men. Morris was imprisoned in debtors' prison for three years and was only released in 1801 after the passage of the Bankruptcy Act of 1800. Nicholson himself died there in 1800.
