Robert Morris Autograph Letter Signed "Robt Morris." One page, 7.5" x 9.75", no place; April 3, 1798. Addressed to Jonathan Nicholson Esq., regarding contracts. The letter reads in full: "I send the enclosed note from D. Allison that you may consider & give you opinion as to the answer. I believe you have the contracts or copies of them. I have not looked at them but will do it in order to form my own opinion, your return D. Allisons note to yours."

Robert Morris (1734-1806), Signer of the Declaration of Independence, financier and politician, was instrumental in the financing of Washington's armies, and later financially ruined through his speculation in western lands. At the time, Morris was living in Philadelphia's Prune Street debtor's prison (February 1798 to August 1801). In 1800, Congress passed landmark bankruptcy legislation, at least in some part to ensure Morris' release from prison.
