DescriptionRichard Stockton Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7.25" x 10.75", Middlesex County [New Jersey], January 12, 1764. Stockton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, signs boldly in the lower left corner as a witness on this court document to "Elias Boudinot Esq, One of the Attorneys of the Inferior Court of Comon [sic] Pleas for the County of Middlesex." Elias Boudinot, Stockton's brother-in-law, was also a delegate from New Jersey to the Continental Congress, serving as its president from 1782 until 1783.
New Jersey chose Stockton as a delegate to the Second Continental Congress in 1776. That summer, he became the first New Jersey delegate to sign the Declaration of Independence. While on an inspection tour for the congress, he was captured by the British and imprisoned at New York's Provost Prison. Poor treatment of Stockton at the hands of the British hastened his death, which occurred in 1781 at age fifty. This court case of John Gilleland v. Ezekiel Forman is docketed twice on the verso. The paper is darkly toned and carefully inset into a larger archival sheet for an overall size of 8.25" x 11".
