DescriptionRichard Ellis Autograph Document Signed as President of the Convention of 1836. One page, 7.75" x 8". Undated, but likely circa 1836. In full: "I certify that the Hon. John Turner has served as a member of the convention in March last seventeen Days and traveled in coming to and going from the convention five hundred miles. [signed] Richard Ellis Pres[iden]t of the Convention." Beneath are three sets of numbers, likely the math done to assess the monies owed to Turner for services rendered.
Ellis was elected president of the Convention of 1836 and signed the Texas Declaration in that capacity. His manner and diplomacy are greatly credited with the accomplishments reached, including the writing of the Constitution of the Republic of Texas. John Turner attended the Convention as a delegate from San Patricio, and was also a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.
Condition: Flattened folds, with traces of ink ghosting at top occurring when document was originally folded. Gently toned, with a few stray stains, and irregular right margin likely resulting when integral page was removed.
