DescriptionPeter Hansborough Bell Land Grant Signed "P.H. Bell" as governor of Texas. One partially-printed page, 14.75" x 12.5", Austin, June 5, 1850, granting "Henry S. Phillips . . . Six hundred and forty acres of Land . . . In Travis County." Countersigned by Texas Declaration of Independence signer George Washington Smyth (1803-1866) as commissioner of the General Land Office. Docketed on the verso. Folds; small holes along the upper horizontal fold. Overall, uneven toning.
Peter H. Bell (1810-1898) served under General Sam Houston as an adjutant on the general's staff during the Texas Revolution and was present at the Battle of San Jacinto. He served in the Texas Rangers under John C. "Jack" Hays and took part in the 1842 Somervell Expedition. In 1845, he was made a captain of the Texas Rangers in command of the Corpus Christi district. He served as a lieutenant colonel of the Second Regiment, Texas Mounted Volunteers, during the Mexican War.
