Peter B. Porter Autograph Letter Signed as Secretary of War. One page, 7.25" x 10", Washington, July 14, 1828, to John Sloane, Congressman from Ohio. Porter responds to Congressman Sloane who has requested certain documents regarding the Treaty of 1818 in order to establish some claim or find some fault. The letter has toned and has the usual fold creases. There are two small areas of loss at the top edge and mounting remnants on the verso, otherwise it remains bright and in very good condition.

    More Information:

Porter writes, in part: "Maj. [illegible] has made an examination of the Journal of Proceedings, and other papers in the Department, relating to the Treaty of 1818; but without being able to find any documents which give to prove, or even has relation to, the particular points which it is your wish to establish. He thinks that the papers have been withdrawn, or that they are in the Dept. of State, to which he proposes to take his examination. Should they be found, copies will be immediately forwarded to you unless their character should appear to be such as to make their disclosure incompatible with the policy or good faith of the government." Porter then shifts gears and comments on the upcoming Presidential election: "Our political prospects in N. York, Pennsylvania & Maryland are very fair, & constantly improving. I find that the general impression of the calculating men of both parties is, that the fate of the Presidential election will be determined by the results of the approaching state elections in Kentucky. We look therefore with great interest to that event."
