In full: "I certify that Capt Philip Marett was discharged from the State Regiment of Artillery, the 30th day of last Jany. by Order of the Honble Council." Signed by Revere as Lieutenant Colonel. Show-through at "re" of Revere's signature from docket on verso, else dark and bold with fine paraph. The entire document is in very fine condition and is darkly penned and signed. Matted with a color reproduction of the portrait of Revere by John Singleton Copley and ornately framed under glass. Overall size, 17.25" x 31.25".

A copper engraver and silversmith by trade, Paul Revere is best remembered for his "midnight ride" of April 18-19, 1775, immortalized in Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's poem Paul Revere's Ride. In April, 1776, Revere was commissioned a major of Infantry in the Massachusetts State Militia. He was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel of Artillery in November and was stationed at Castle William, defending Boston harbor. In 1778 and 1779, Paul Revere commanded the garrison at Castle William. Revolutionary War-dated military documents signed by Paul Revere are scarce and this is an excellent example completely handwritten and signed by the great American patriot.
