DescriptionPatrick Henry Surveyor's License Twice Signed "P. Henry" as governor of Virginia. One sheet (two pages), 8.25" x 13", Richmond, June 28, 1786. This "William and Mary college" license certifies Josiah Swearingen "surveyor for the county of Berkeley." Swearingen was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, where he served as a captain. Also signed by James Madison (cousin to future president James Madison), George Wythe (Signer of the Declaration), Robert Andrews, and Charles Belline, all representatives of the College of William and Mary at Williamsburg. Patrick Henry has signed both sides of the document. A blind-embossed paper seal exists on each side. Age toned, some soiling, and separations beginning along some folds. One edge is uneven.
