Description

    Pair of William E. Dodge Autograph Letters Signed. 1). Signed "W.E. Dodge", one page, 5.25" x 8", Phelps, Dodge & Co. stationery, New York, July 4, 1862. Written to a group of men who invited him to a lecture; Dodge gladly accepts their invitation in this short letter. 2). Signed "W.E. Dodge", two pages, 5.25" x 8", Phelps, Dodge & Co. stationery, New York, December 15, 1857. The salutation only reads "dear Sir"; the letter reads in part: "I suppose we will have a meeting of this bus. committee before the next regular meeting & talk over these matters. I shall try to be at the lecture this ev'g but have an engagement immediately afterwards...".

    William E. Dodge was not only one of the "Merchant Princes" of Wall Street, but was also a staunch abolitionist in the years leading up to the Civil War and afterwards. He was also known for his compassionate views on the rights of Native Americans. He was also a founding member of the Y.M.C.A., and a member of the National Temperance Society. The man was a model for temperance and compassion; this lot features two letters from this likeable character that are both perfect for display. Letter one is in very fine condition; light overall toning; usual folds are present; no edge damage. Letter two is in very fine condition; light overall toning; usual folds are present.
