    Pair of Levi Woodbury Autograph Letters Signed, "Levi Woodbury". The first, one page, 8.0" x 9.5", Washington, D.C., November 13, 1838 to Alabama Governor Arthur P. Bagby. Woodbury had the dubious honor of serving as Secretary of the Treasury during the devastating financial Panic of 1837. This letter partially reads, "...I have caused to be forwarded to you a copy of the last report made to Congress on the condition of the bank. If you have any documents in your possession relative to the condition of the banks in Alabama...I will be much obliged to you if you will cause copies of them to be forwarded to this Department...". Light soiling, else Fine condition. The second letter, one page with address panel, 8.0" x 10.0", Washington, D.C., July 5, 1839 to President Van Buren in New York. Marked "Confidential" at the top, this letter partially reads, "...I regret to inform you that Mr. Hays has not yet depreciated the money...the balance is large, amounting to near $75,000. I feel bound to communicate the result immediately...". Two isolated ink stains and a small area of paper loss from seal breakage on the address panel. Fine condition. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.
