Description

Pair of DeWitt Clinton Autograph Letters Signed. Often referred to as the "Father of the Erie Canal," served in the New York State Legislature and the U.S. Senate, and was Mayor of New York City and Governor of New York State. He was also an unsuccessful Presidential candidate against James Madison in 1812. There are two letters of DeWitt Clinton, one from December 1806 referencing federalism "This is a great victory. The republican lion has roused from his slumbers and federalism will be like a dew drop on his mane..." and another dated December 1807 about the Oregon embargo under Jefferson "Your embargo will create more stress in this city than in any other place and I am apprehensive that the farmers will complain of the reduced price of wheat...The neglect has been unfavorable and if any disastrous consequences shall result I am apprehensive that a deadly blow will be given to his popularity of his administration...Whether the V. P. is a candidate for a higher office I know not - I cannot think that Mr. J. would be guilty of so great an act of rudeness and impropriety as to refer to him in his address...". Very nice subject matter for this central figure in early 19th century American history. 7" x 8.5" and 7.75" x 9.5", very good to fine condition.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
