    Description

Oliver Wolcott directs payment for Connecticut's electors for the 1796 presidential election

Oliver Wolcott Document Signed Twice As Governor of Connecticut. Two pages with blank integral, 7.75" x 13", "City of Hartford Council Chamber," December 8, 1796. This document, titled "The Debenture of the Electors for the Election of a President & Vice President of the United States," contains the list of electors and the amounts due them for their services. Signed twice by Wolcott: first next to the entry for his payment; and again in his capacity as Governor beneath an endorsement in his hand. Also signed by electors Jonathan Trumbull, Jr., J. Root, and Herman Swift. Document is lightly toned with several fold separations.

With the retirement of George Washington, this election was the first to evidence party politics and campaigning. All nine of Connecticut's electors voted for John Adams (Federalist Party), who would eventually win the Presidency. For Vice President, John Jay received five votes and Thomas Pinckney received four. None voted for the eventual winner, Adams' opponent for the Presidency, Thomas Jefferson (Democratic-Republican Party).
