Description

Nineteenth Century Autograph Album, circa 1870s. Measuring 6" x 9", this leather bound autograph book, once the property of E.C. Bartlett, is filled with over eighty signatures of politicians, military men, authors, etc. Most are placed directly on the page, but several later signatures are on separate paper and affixed. A notation from Bartlett on the inside of the front board concerns these later signatures: "The autographs on thin paper are all genuine originals and not traced, as might be supposed." Notable names include Presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Andrew Johnson, and James A. Garfield. Most of President Grant's cabinet is represented, including Vice President Schuyler Colfax, Secretary of State Hamilton Fish, Secretary of War William Belknap, et al. Several members of Abraham Lincoln's cabinet, such as Simon Cameron, Lincoln's first secretary of war, and Hannibal Hamlin, Lincoln's first vice president, have also placed their signatures.

Other names include Senator Charles Sumner, who was beaten in the Senate chamber by Preston Brooks, after denouncing the Kansas-Nebraska Act in his "Crime against Kansas" speech; Union general and Illinois senator, John A. Logan; John Sherman, future secretary of state and younger brother of Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman; abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison; a several authors/poets including Oliver Wendell Homes Sr., Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier, and William Cullen Bryant. The textblock is damaged toward the middle of the book and several pages are detached.
